Wood Cutting Permits
There are four types of forestry-related permits handed out at the Division of Resource Management:
1. Paid Timber Permits:
These permits are issued by the Forestry Department and are used for smaller areas where disturbance is required for such things as house clearings, road easements, drain fields, and smaller forest improvement areas.
2. Free Use Permits:
These permits issued by the Forestry Department and are used for up to 10 cords of firewood annually. You must a tribal enrollee to get a free use permit and they can only be given out for lands managed by Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. If you would like to get a gathering permit on other ownerships (County, State, or Forest Service), you must obtain a permit from that agency.
3. Burn Permits:
These permits may be obtained from the front desk at the Division of Resource Management or from your local fire warden. These permits may only be obtained if weather conditions warrant; burning permits will not be given if the fire danger is too high.
4. Balsam Bough Permits:
These permits may be obtained from the front desk at the Division of Resource Management. This permit is required for picking boughs and will only be given out following the first hard frost of the season
