Leech Lake Environmental Supplemtary Scholarships

Environmental lands DepartmentThere is a shortage of Native American Environment Professionals. Leech Lake Environmental Department sees this issue and is promoting science degrees for Band Members. The department is implementing the Leech Lake Environmental Supplementary Scholarship Program. The program is designed to financially assist Leech Lake Enrolled Members who are registered in 2 or more Science related courses at an accredited College or University. This Scholarship is designed to assist and encourage band member students to take science related courses.

Eligible Candidates must be:

  • Enrolled Leech Lake Band Members who have completed the Department’s Summer Youth Experience
  • Registered in 2 or more science related courses at an accredited College or University
  • Must have a cumulative GPA over 2.0 or be a first semester student

Application Packet must include:

  • Completed Scholarship Application (attached and will change each semester)
  • Current class schedule showing registration in 2 or more science related courses
  • Current GPA or be a first semester student

Students will be able to apply each semester that they qualify.

Selection Process:

  • Application must be submitted to Leech Lake Environmental Office by the September 21 for fall and January 28 for spring semester.
  • Scholarship selection committee (Air, Water, Brownfields Program Managers
    and Environmental Staff ) will have two weeks from the application deadline to select two recipients for the scholarships.
  • Criteria for the scholarship:
    • Environmental essay
    • Community outreach work
  • Award letter will be sent to recipient and an awards luncheon with Environmental Staff will be scheduled

Summer Youth BrochureThe application form essay question will change each semester.

Award:

  • 2 students per semester (Fall and Spring)
  • $200 per student
